A Legacy of Family Doctoring

The concept of the Family Doctor has deep roots in community care. Traditionally, family doctors were trusted physicians who cared for entire families across generations—offering not just medical treatment, but understanding, empathy, and continuity of care.
Dr. Ian McWhinney, a pioneer in Family Medicine, laid down 9 principles that continue to guide us:

  • Long-term commitment to every patient

  • Caring in context of family & community

  • Prevention at every touchpoint

  • Care at home, clinic, and hospital

  • Coordination across specialties

  • Trust in stories, not just symptoms

  • Efficient and ethical resource use

These principles form the soul of our practice.
Today, family doctors serve as the cornerstone of primary healthcare, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and long-term wellness—bridging the gap between individuals, families, and the broader health system.
With the rise of specialization and hospital-based medicine, this personal connection began to fade. However, modern Family Medicine has re-emerged as a vital discipline, combining evidence-based science with holistic, patient-centered care.
